My Italian Diary: San Polo d'Enza

For anyone who doesn’t know me personally, I am a very spiritual person. I believe in the signs, signals, and guidance my ancestors and loved ones provide for me…and I trust them — that everything is going to be ok. This confidence and trust in the universe gets me through very difficult times, and I feel a very strong connection to those who have passed on, even those I have never met.

When I was younger, a close friend of mine passed away from Cystic Fibrosis. She was only 13, born on March 13, 1993 (3/13/93). Jena was unspeakably sick, but there was never a single moment where she was not smiling, laughing, and happy…sharing that happiness with everyone around her. Her parents started a yearly luncheon where we would share memories, laugh and reminisce. There became so many symbols that represented Jena that all of us hold so closely. ‘Pennies from Heaven,’ York peppermint patties, rainbows, ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ and roses (Cystic Fibrosis is known also as ‘Sixty Five Roses’).

When we first moved to Italy, I kept repeatedly seeing rainbows on random days, or I would pass by a shop that was playing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and I would smile knowing that it may be difficult now, but Jena is with me. We finally gave in and went to an agency, since looking at private apartments was almost more expensive. The agent took us to one of the towns we were hoping to be in, and on the way to see the apartment, she had us turn around to see how close we are to the old square.

When I turned around, there it was clear as day on a building in the square: 3 13. I whispered to myself, "Thank you, Jena." And thought we FINALLY found a place to live. The agent opened the apartment door and I HATED it. I was like, "Thank you, Jena, but commonnnnn!!"

I sent an email about a different apartment in the same town before Davide had gotten to see the post. I showed him later and he said it was too small, so I took it off our endless list. Two weeks later, I received a phone call to come see a place in San Polo d'Enza (our town...Saint Polo of the River). We had no idea which place it was because we had called so many, but went anyway. It was the place Davide said to take off that I had already emailed! We fell in LOVE with it. It was everything we were looking for. We have a balcony AND washing machine!!!! Anyone who lives in NYC can hopefully understand how excited we are. It’s the little things, ya know?

As we were leaving, I looked at the building number...1/3...with 3 flourishing rose bushes in the yard. I stood silently for a moment, in complete awe. I couldn't help but cry (I'm sure I made quite the impression on the agent...crying & laughing). I whispered again, "Thank you, Jena."

“Coincidentally” on our moving day, 16 August 2018, our shipping container arrived from America. The next day, we parted for the sea to live out that trip we had been planning for months on end.

I've been so amazed how every day that I'm here, I receive a little message of hope from all of our angels. Especially on days where I'm questioning why I'm doing this. They're right there, always.
